Of whales and ships
Interactive installation
2024
Of Whales and Ships is an interactive installation commisioned by the Maritime Museum of Rotterdam.
Within a space meant to glorify the history of shipping, the purpose of the work was to offer a more than human perspective on the growing presence of human infrastructures in maritime space.
The work presents itself as a combination of two elements, a sculpture of an enlarged sperm whale tympanic bulla (ear bone), and a sensor which detects the breathing of spectators.
The work presents itself as a combination of two elements, a sculpture of an enlarged sperm whale tympanic bulla (ear bone), and a sensor which detects the breathing of spectators.
Viewers are invited to hold their breath to activate a sonic map of the waters in the Rotterdam Port. The ear bone sculpture emits sounds of offshore infrastructures which impact migration routes, feeding and mating of cetaceans. This installation is meant to highlight the sonic impact of the infrastructures which are explained and exhibited within the Maritime Museum.
