Biography

Gabriele Nasole (b. 1997) is an artist and designer based in the Netherlands. His work focuses on oceanic topics, drawing from research into critical oceanography, mythology and interdisciplinary collaborations. He uses a range of media such as sculpture, sound, interactive installations and more to unveil the relationships between human society and maritime space. His work focuses on contrasting the land-sea binary, favouring an understanding of the ocean as a system which extends beyond the waterline, into physical and mental realms.

Statement

We come from the ocean. Our bodies contain saltwater. As an artist and a freediver, I feel the need to tell the stories about the relationship we share with water bodies, and the value of embracing an oceanic perspective in which turbulence, fluidity and cycles shape our actions. The imaginary distance separating modern human society from the ocean is at the root of many issues regarding faulty juridical frameworks governing the seas, ramifications of colonialism, ecological disasters and more, all happening in a space which is miscomprehended by most.
