The mythological condition of the sea and its incomprehensible vastness make it hard to imagine an end and a beginning of such a space, in which the real and the imaginary flow together in one place. The desire and act of mapping the boundaries of this space is one of the largest cartographical quests of modern human society.
Fathom explores the technical mediation we are faced with when understanding places such as the seabed through self referential maps, and the incremented distance caused by methods of representation, exploration and scale.
The desire to empty out and intellectually appropriate the seafloor was and still is a necessary tool for plunder and control.
